Amber – Aldgate

Amber - entrance

Amber has only been open for a few months, and I can already tell it’s going to become a firm favourite in the area. Hidden round a corner in the Goodman’s Fields development near Aldgate East station, it serves up Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food from breakfast to dinner time. The name comes from the “Amber Road”, an ancient trade route running from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.

Amber - salads

A beautiful selection of salads

The main counter where you can see all the salads and cakes

The first thing you see when you walk inside is the collection of vibrantly coloured salads on the counter. They contain a myriad of typical Middle Eastern ingredients- think harissa, ras-el-hanout, pomegranate seeds and dried fruits. All of which make the best kind of salads in my opinion! No limp lettuce leaves to be seen here.

The interior of the restaurant is beautifully designed, feeling modern yet relaxed and homely. The large windows at the front mean you get a lot of natural light – perfect for taking photos!

Amber - breakfast menu

The breakfast and brunch menu

On a Sunday you get a choice of both the breakfast and lunch menus up until 3pm. Although I appreciated the choice of menus, it did mean that everyone took twice as long as normal to decide what to order!

The lunch menu

For my main, I decided it was breakfast time and went for the zucchini (AKA courgette!) and halloumi fritters with a simit on the side (similar to a sesame bagel). The kale and herb salad under the fritters was perhaps a little too salty for some, however the fritters themselves were divine and eggs cooked to perfection.

Amber - food selection

What a spread! Pide, salads, courgette fritters, burnt aubergine, simit and more!

Pide – Turkey’s sort-of pizza

I was originally worried about getting the dreaded food envy but luckily was really happy with my choice. Plus, going with a group of who people are happy to share gave me the chance to taste some other things! As a group we mostly went for breakfast dishes, the burnt aubergine being the most popular choice.

So many goodies to choose from

Amber kindly offered us a free dessert as part of our meal. There were a number of different cakes and baked goods to choose from, including a VERY green spinach cake! Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste of spinach and instead has a very moist texture with flavour more like a normal sponge cake.

Such a light and airy feeling interior

Many thanks to Charlotte (@notsobasiclondon) for organising this meal as part of The London Food Social. Looking forward to the next event!
